BMW's flagship coupe in its ultimate form, the Alpina B8 makes no compromises on either speed or luxury.

Positioned higher than the already luxurious BMW 840i, the BMW Alpina B8 is the ultimate luxury full-size four-door coupe from BMW's stable. The tuned V8 under the hood producing an outstanding 612 hp, coupled with all the luxury and tech that you could think of, makes the Alpina B8 a great proposition for the segment. It looks ravishing inside out.

Offered for a base MSRP of $144,900, the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 comes with many significant changes from the regular 8 Series, and all of them focus to provide the passengers with utmost comfort. The classy design and many bespoke elements on the interior and exterior will take your breath away. There is a long list of customization options as well. Competing with the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 and Audi RS7 Sportback, here are 10 things you need to know before buying the 2022 BMW Alpina B8.

Under the hood lies the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the BMW M850i, producing an incredible 612 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes mated to a ZF sourced 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox and the xDrive AWD drivetrain.

0-60 mph comes in just 3.3 seconds and the top speed is 201 mph. This makes the Alpina B8 about 0.2 seconds faster than the Audi RS7 Sportback and ties it with the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupe. There are multiple driving modes and adaptive dampers as well, and both of these also contribute significantly to the driving experience.

Being a flagship offering from the BMW stable, the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 looks impressive from any angle due to the perfect coupe proportions and the unmatched attention to detail this German marque has provided. The front quarter is easily the most enticing angle due to the angular front end with LED headlights, air vents, Alpina badging near the air dam, and sharp bumper design.

The long hood and the smaller kidney grille are a departure from the quirky new design language of BMW. The long wheelbase and length help in terms of interior space as well. The massive 21" wheels with Brembo brakes, subtle fender vents, and the classy rear end with LED taillights, quad exhaust, and blacked-out air diffuser look fantastic too.

Offered in six standard Extended Merino Leather options as standard, the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 feels plenty premium for the price. The leather seats are flawless for having a comfortable traveling experience and the quilted stitching and many standard features make it a perfect companion for the highways. However, the opulence isn't limited just to the seats.

The entire dashboard and most of the door cards come covered in leather with contrast stitching, aluminum accents, and multiple wooden inserts. You could get carbon fiber or walnut trim too. The optional Cognac leather upholstery feels even more luxurious. The neat dashboard design with well-integrated infotainment and digital gauge cluster along with the perfect ergonomic cabin makes it even more perfect.

Both the front and rear seats of the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 have more than enough legroom, headroom, and shoulder room, making it perfect for five adults to travel with utmost comfort. The seats have more under-thigh and lower back support than the rivals, and the front leather seats get heated, powered, and ventilation support. The panoramic roof provides plenty of light inside as well.

Open the rear hatch with the press of a button, and 15.5 cu ft of cargo space isn't the best of the segment, making it not as versatile as the RS7 Sportback. But, the cargo capacity does increase if you fold down the rear seat.

The first thing that you'll notice when in the driver's seat is the massive 12.3" Live Cockpit Professional display. It offers all the necessary information, and the graphics are sharp and crisp. The 10.3" mounted touchscreen iDrive infotainment system comes with all the relevant features and gets the job done perfectly.

All the features such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, navigation, and wi-fi hotspot are standard. However, the display feels a bit small by 2022 standards. The optional Bowers & Wilkins 20-speaker audio system is plenty punchy and offers a top-notch audio listening experience. The balanced audio output is going to be perfect for the folks who want a more neutral audio quality.

The base price of $144,900 of the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 makes it not the most value-for-money offering in the segment. The base 840i has a perfect compromise between luxury and performance, and the pricing is very competitive. Even the M850i feels more of a bargain when compared to the Alpina B8, with a base MSRP of close to $100,000.

Most of the much-needed features that you would expect from a car from the luxury segment are on board with both the lower trims from the 8 Series lineup. Even if you opt for all the bells and whistles, it is still going to be much cheaper than the Alpina B8. Along with that, the Audi RS7 Sportback is about $40,000 cheaper too.

Being the most expensive offering of the segment, the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 does get all the required features that the prospective buyers would expect from the segment. The cabin comes filled with features such as the panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated leather seats, four-zone climate control, soft close doors, Alcantara headliner, and an iDrive infotainment system.

The safety and driver-assistance section also sees no major compromises such as in the case of the Porsche Panamera, which misses out on many features. The exterior features such as the 21" Alpina wheels, painted Brembo brake calipers, functional air vents, quad exhaust system, air diffuser, and LED lights all around are standard too.

The 2022 BMW Alpina B8 comes with 4-wheel disc brakes with 15.6" and 15.7" ventilated front and rear rotors. This helps the moniker to stop without any fuss from higher speeds. Along with that, the braking features such as automated emergency braking, brake assist, hill hold control, hill descent control, and ABS with EBD are standard too.

The 21" alloy wheels reveal the four-piston Brembo brake calipers for the front and rear and the sticky Pirelli rubber that is specially made for the Alpina B8 adds to the braking performance considerably as well.

The fuel efficiency numbers of the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 are almost similar to the M850i trim that comes standard with the xDrive AWD drivetrain. This luxury four-door coupe could do 17 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highways, equating to combined gas mileage of 19 MPG.

The fuel tank capacity of 18 gallons helps the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 to do close to 306 miles in the city and 432 miles on the highways on a full tank of gas. In comparison, both the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 and the Audi RS7 Sportback achieved a slightly lower combined gas mileage of 17 mpg.

The standard driver-assistance features such as automated emergency braking, collision mitigation system for the front and rear, frontal collision warning, lane keeping assist, and driver monitoring alert are present in the 2022 BMW Alpina B8. All the basic safety features are on board too.

If you need the lane departure warning with activated steering, headlight control, intelligent speed assist, blind junction view, traffic sign recognition, and 360-degree camera, you would need to opt for the optional Driving Assistance Package 2 priced at an additional $1,800.
