Kia announces the recall, in France, of 3,460 electric cars, more precisely EV6. The reason: a risk of accident when parked if the handbrake is not correctly engaged.

original article : On electric cars and thermal cars with automatic gearboxes, the parking mode makes it possible to do without a handbrake. In practice, many motorists are content to switch the car to P mode (parking) so that the engine locks the drive wheels, without using the handbrake. The latter offers additional safety by applying the brakes to ensure that the car cannot move when parked. A software problem with the Kia EV6 reminds us that the handbrake can sometimes be more useful than it seems.
Indeed, Kia France tells us that a recall is currently underway in France. A total of 3,460 Kia EV6s are subject to this recall. The cause: the speed selector (forward, park, neutral and reverse) which can disengage parking mode without warning, then freewheeling the car. If the car is parked on a slope, the consequences can be unfortunate, since if the electric handbrake is not engaged, the car could cause an accident.
The Korean brand has already found the solution. If you are affected by the recall (car produced between July 17, 2022 and May 2, 2022), you will simply have to visit a dealership to update the SCU software. The duration of the intervention is estimated at 30 minutes and will of course be borne by the manufacturer. The brand specifies that to date, no accident has been reported in France. Vehicles produced after May 2, 2022 are not subject to the recall.
If you are affected by this recall and the update has not yet been performed, we recommend that you carefully consider activate the electric handbrake each time you enter parking mode. Indeed, the Kia EV6 does not automatically apply the handbrake when the ignition is switched off. But it is possible that the bug also disables the electric parking brake. We have contacted Kia France to find out more and will update the article in the event of new information.
Unlike its Ioniq 5 cousin from Hyundai, the Kia EV6 cannot yet receive OTA (over-the-air) updates remotely. This should be the case in the coming months, but only for the infotainment system, as is the case for its Ioniq 5 counterpart. Too bad since other manufacturers offer OTA updates for the entire system (like Tesla or more recently Volkswagen) to avoid going to the workshop.
